Studies on the Sugar Accumulation in F1 Hybrids Oriental Melon (Cucumis melo L.)

Abstract
To find out the influence of parents on the fruit sugar content of F©û hybrids in oriental melon (Cucumis melo L.), accumulation patterns of sucrose, fructose, glucose and total sugars were examined in the fruits of the F©û hybrids from the crosses between `Euncheon(sin)¢¥ , `Cheongsagwa¢¥ and `Josaeng-Hwanghyang¢¥ (female parents) and `Gaeeuncheon¢¥ (pollen parent). The sugar contents of F©û hybrids were lower than those of the pollen parent but higher than those of the female parents regardless of sugar kinds and cross combinations. The time of sucrose accumulation was found to be earlier in F©û hybrids than in the female parents but later than in the pollen parent. Particularly, the sucrose content, a crucial factor for the sweetness determination in fruits, was found to be higher in the F©û hybrids as compared to the lower contents in female parents. Results from the present study suggest that when an inbred line with a high fruit sucrose content is used as a pollen parent for the production of F©û hydrids in oriental melon (Cucumis melo L.), fruit sucrose contents of F©û hybrids would become higher even though the sucrose contents of female parents are low.
